- • Contrast is far too low - most scanners will fail. Darken the code or lighten the background.
- • Contrast is below the 4.5:1 guideline. Try a darker foreground.
- • Contrast is workable but not generous. Fine on screen, riskier in print.
- • Light code on a dark background. Modern phones cope; older scanners often do not.
- • Long content with low error correction. Raise error correction to Quartile or High.
- • The content is long, so the code is dense. Print it larger, or shorten the content.
- • The logo covers a lot of the code. Below 30% is safer.
- • With a logo, use High error correction.
- • The quiet zone is very tight. Increase it under Shape & style.

The code holds your network name, the security type and the password in a small structured string. A phone camera recognises the format and offers to join the network, so nobody has to read a 20-character password off a fridge magnet. It works out of the box on iOS 11 and later and on Android 10 and later; older Android phones may need a QR app that supports WiFi payloads.
A security note worth reading
The password is inside the code, in plain text. Anyone who can photograph the code can extract it with any QR reader. That is fine for a cafe or a spare room, and a bad idea for your main office network.
If you want guests online without handing over your primary credentials:
- Enable the guest network on your router - most consumer routers have one.
- Give it its own password, separate from the main network.
- Turn on client isolation if the router offers it, so guests cannot see each other’s devices.
- Generate the QR code for the guest network only.
Change the guest password periodically and print a new code. It takes a minute and it means a photo taken a year ago stops working.
Getting the details right
- Network name (SSID) must match exactly, including capitals.
Cafe WiFiandcafe wifiare different networks. - Encryption is almost always WPA/WPA2 on modern routers. WPA3 networks also work with the WPA setting. Choose “no password” only for genuinely open networks.
- Hidden networks need the hidden box ticked, otherwise the phone will not find the network after reading the code.
- Special characters like
;,,,:and\in a password are handled automatically - they are escaped for you.
Printing it
Laminate anything that lives on a table or a wall; a scuffed code stops scanning. Print at least 2 x 2 cm, and larger if people will scan it from across a room. Adding a short caption such as “Free WiFi - scan to connect” measurably increases the number of people who try it.
